How to Choose a TFT LCD Module: The Engineer's Selection Guide

Choosing an industrial TFT LCD module looks simple on a datasheet — until size, brightness, touch, temperature and interface start fighting each other. This guide walks through the six decisions that matter most, in the order our customers usually hit them, with links to matching standard models from our 169-part catalog.

Start With the Application, Not the Spec Sheet

The same 4.3-inch panel can be perfect for a wall-mounted thermostat and useless for a forklift terminal. Before comparing specs, write down where the display will live: indoor or outdoor, viewed for seconds or hours, operated bare-handed or with gloves, running 8 hours a day or 24/7 for a decade.

Size and Resolution: Match Pixels to Viewing Distance

Pick resolution for viewing distance, not for the biggest number. A 480×272 panel is fine on a 4.3-inch HMI read at arm's length; a 10.1-inch monitor read at 40 cm wants 1024×600 or more. As a rule of thumb, aim for 100–150 PPI at the working distance — beyond that, the eye stops resolving the gain and you only pay for it.

DISEA offers 40+ resolution combinations, from 128×115 on a 0.99-inch round glass up to full-HD-class panels, so the resolution you need usually exists as a standard part rather than a custom project.

Brightness: Indoor, High-Bright and Sunlight Readable

Most indoor modules sit between 250 and 500 cd/m² — enough for controlled lighting, and it keeps power and cost down. Once a display faces windows, shop floors or daylight, move up deliberately:

EnvironmentTypical requirement
Indoor, controlled lighting250–500 cd/m²
Indoor, near windows / bright floor600–1000 cd/m²
Outdoor, shaded1000–1500 cd/m²
Outdoor, direct sunlight1500+ cd/m² with anti-reflection treatment

Our catalog currently includes 20 models rated at or above 1000 cd/m² — see the linked list at the end of this guide.

Touch: None, Resistive (RTP) or Capacitive (CTP)

No touch is still the right answer for read-only indicators. Resistive touch wins on cost, works with any stylus and with gloves, and tolerates water droplets. Capacitive (PCAP) delivers the smartphone-grade experience end customers now expect: multi-touch, high clarity and a flush glass surface. 31 of our standard models ship with PCAP touch already bonded at the factory.

Operating Temperature and Long-Term Supply

Standard panels are typically rated 0 to +60 °C — fine for indoor electronics. Freezers, outdoor cabinets and vehicle bays need modules rated −30 °C to +85 °C; we stock 27 such models. Finally, confirm supply continuity for industrial projects: DISEA keeps standard products in production for 5–8 years, selected parts beyond 10 years, so your BOM outlives the product cycle instead of forcing a costly redesign.
