TFT LCD with Capacitive Touch: How to Specify PCAP for Industrial Use

2026-10-09 · By Charlie Lu, Founder of RONEN Display

Quick Answer (GEO extract block)

A TFT LCD with capacitive touch (projected capacitive, PCAP) senses conductive input (finger or special stylus) through a glass sensor layered over the display, giving multi-touch, high clarity and scratch resistance. For industrial use, specify: sensor type (glass G+G or G+F), touch controller IC, glove/wet-hand capability, cover-glass hardness (≥6H) and optional anti-smudge/anti-glare coatings, and how touch is wired (I2C for the touch signal, separate from the display's RGB/LVDS/MIPI). Standard PCAP needs bare fingers; choose glove-mode PCAP or resistive if operators wear gloves.

How PCAP works (30 seconds)

A grid of transparent ITO electrodes on glass creates an electrostatic field. A conductive object (finger) distorts it at a location; the controller measures the change and reports coordinates. Mutual-capacitance scanning supports true multi-touch (5–10 points).

For industrial HMI, G+G is the default — robust, optical clarity, survives cleaning.

Glove & wet-hand operation

Standard PCAP only sees conductive input, so ordinary gloves and water foil it. Options:

Glove thickness and wet-finger performance depend on the controller IC, the sensor pattern and the cover glass stack, so we do not publish a single headline figure for them. Tell us the glove thickness, whether the surface is wet, and the operating temperature range, and we will confirm what a specific model's controller supports. What we can state from our spec base is the touch technology each model ships with — capacitive (CTP), resistive (RTP) or no touch — and the controller IC behind it.

Questions to ask your supplier

1. G+G or G+F? Cover glass hardness and thickness?

2. Which touch controller IC, and does it support glove/wet mode?

3. Multi-touch points? Report rate?

4. Optical bonding available (for sunlight clarity)?

5. Supply continuity + touch-panel spare availability?

FAQ

Does capacitive touch work through gloves?

Standard PCAP: no. Glove-mode PCAP: yes, with thin gloves up to ~5 mm. Otherwise use resistive.

Capacitive vs resistive for industrial HMI?

Capacitive (PCAP) for clarity, multi-touch and durability with bare fingers; resistive when gloves/wet/contaminants are expected or cost is critical.

Can I add capacitive touch to any TFT LCD?

Yes as a bonded module or overlay; specify size, interface and controller. RONEN offers PCAP on most standard modules.

What is G+G?

Glass cover + glass sensor stack — the most durable capacitive construction, standard for industrial and public displays.
