Custom Shape TFT LCD Displays: When to Cut, When to Open a Mold

Most display projects should start with a standard rectangle — it is cheaper, faster and easier to source. But some products simply refuse to be rectangular: a round dashboard gauge, a shelf-edge price rail, a front panel with a corner radius your bezel cannot hide. This guide breaks shape customization into three levels, shows what each level really costs in tooling and time, and lists the shaped panels you can order from our 193-part catalog today with zero NRE.

Three Levels of Shape Customization — Pick the Cheapest That Works

Shape work is not one thing. In our ODM line it comes in three levels, and the engineering cost drops sharply the lower you stay:

LevelWhat happensTypical NREFirst samples
1 — Catalog shaped panelOrder a bar or round module already tooledNoneStandard sampling, 5–7 working days
2 — Outline cut / structural modExisting panel re-cut (rounded corners, openings) plus brackets, FPC routing, housing fitLower end of project rangeEVT in 6–8 weeks
3 — Custom glass / new toolingNew outline, new backlight and optical stack, driver board designed around your hostUSD 4,800–7,500EVT in 6–8 weeks

Rule of thumb: if a catalog panel gets you 80% there, cut it (Level 2) instead of tooling new glass. Our engineers make that call against the real tooling inventory before you spend anything — feasibility and an NRE quote come back within two business days of your inquiry.

Typical Scenarios Where a Rectangle Fails

These are the request patterns our ODM desk sees again and again (described as capability scenarios, not customer stories):

What We Modify Beyond the Glass

Shape is only one axis. A typical Level-2/3 engagement also touches:

Real Lead Times and Cost Anchors

Numbers first, promises second. These are the anchors our ODM line currently works to:

MilestoneCommitment
Feasibility + NRE quotation after inquirywithin 2 business days
Standard samples (from catalog panel)5–7 working days
EVT samples (shaped / structural projects)6–8 weeks
Mass production lead time18–25 working days
On-time delivery rate96.5%
MOQ500 pcs (batches under 500 carry a +15% premium)
NRE, shaped / structural projectsUSD 4,800–7,500 typical

The +15% small-batch premium exists precisely so you can start at 100–300 units for pilot runs instead of betting the project on a full 500-piece first order.

Shaped Panels Already in Our Catalog — Zero NRE

Before asking for a custom cut, check whether the shape already exists. Our bar-type lineup covers 3.0″–7.0″ with stretched resolutions and brightness up to 1000 cd/m²:

P/NSizeResolutionInterfaceBrightness
DS-T030HUSA-013.0″360×640RGB / MIPI, 40-pin350 cd/m²
DS-T0345BHSA-013.45″340×800RGB 18-bit, 40-pin400 cd/m²
DS-T036BBIA-033.66″240×480MCU / RGB, 40-pin700 cd/m²
DS-T039BPSA-013.9″480×128RGB 24-bit, 40-pin1000 cd/m²
DS-T0399BUSA-013.99″400×9602-lane MIPI, 30-pin450 cd/m²
DS-T068BZSA-016.8″480×12804-lane MIPI, 40-pin450 cd/m²
DS-T070BUSA-017.0″280×14244-lane MIPI, 40-pin350 cd/m²

The round side runs 0.99″–7.0″, from a 0.99″ 128×115 wearable glass up to a 7.0″ 1080×1080 square-resolution circle; a 2.1″ 480×480 at 600 cd/m² (DS-T021BCSA-02) is the workhorse in between. Custom lengths, FPC positions and touch additions on these platforms are routine Level-2 work — see bar-type displays and custom ODM solutions for the application view.

How to Get a Feasibility Answer Fast

The inquiry form that comes back fastest answers nine questions: application, working environment (temperature and brightness need), target size and resolution, interface, whether a mechanical change is required, project stage, and estimated annual volume. Attach your 3D file if the housing already exists — it cuts a full round-trip from the structural review.

Everything above happens inside our own plant in Zhaoqing (Guangdong) — 23,700 m² of floor area, a 72-engineer R&D team, and a quality system certified to IATF 16949:2016 including product design and ISO 13485:2016, so shaped and structural projects run under design-controls discipline rather than ad-hoc engineering. Full process detail lives on our ODM process page, and the FAQ covers certification and supply-continuity questions procurement usually asks first.
