Sunlight Readability Estimator

Will your screen actually be readable outdoors? Compare panel contrast and brightness against the reflected light from your environment and front-surface treatment.

Enter values and press Evaluate.
Estimated result only — please confirm with our engineers for final design.

Results are engineering estimates for early sizing — always confirm against the module datasheet before design freeze.

Model: Lreflect = E × R / π; effective contrast = Lon / (Lon/CR + Lreflect). Reflectance values are typical for industrial stacks. For guaranteed readability, validate on a real sample under your lighting.

FAQ

What contrast ratio is readable outdoors?

Aim for at least 5 to 1 effective on-screen contrast in your target environment. Below that, text washes out in direct sun even at high brightness. Optical bonding and AR coating recover most of the loss.

Does brightness alone fix sunlight readability?

Not by itself. Reflectance from the front surface often dominates; cutting it with optical bonding (OCA) and an AR coating is usually more cost-effective than pushing nits higher.

When should I use the sunlight readability estimator?

Use it when specifying a display for any outdoor or window-facing application: enter panel contrast, brightness, ambient light and front-surface treatment to get an effective-contrast verdict before you choose the module.
