Capacitive Touch Cover-Glass Thickness Calculator

Capacitive (PCAP/CTP) touch controllers struggle as cover-glass thickness grows. This tool estimates the maximum cover-glass thickness your touch layer can reliably sense, and flags when you need a bridge-ITO or metal-mesh solution.

FAQ

Why does thickness limit touch?

Mutual-capacitance coupling between the finger and the sensor decays with distance. Standard ITO sensors reliably sense through ~1.0 mm glass; beyond that signal-to-noise drops and false touches rise.

Can I use a thick cover with gloves?

Glove and wet-finger operation needs lower coupling thresholds and often a metal-mesh or DITO sensor, plus firmware tuning. Plan for ≤0.7 mm effective sensing for gloved use.

When do I need the cover-glass thickness calculator?

Use it when specifying a projective-capacitive (PCAP) touch display, especially for outdoor, industrial, or gloved-use designs. It balances impact resistance and IK rating against touch sensitivity so the glass survives drops yet still senses reliably.
