8.8 Inch Bar Type LCD Module Guide
Quick Answer
A bar type TFT LCD — also called a stretched or strip display — is a module with an extreme aspect ratio (for example 1920×480 or 480×1920) built for status bars, information strips and narrow equipment bezels. RONEN's current bar line spans 8.8–9.16 inch with LVDS or MIPI interfaces and 400–1200 cd/m² luminance. Five real models are listed below with full specifications; on this site, search “8.8 inch bar” to jump straight to them — the on-site search now matches both inch and quote-mark sizing.
What a bar type LCD actually is
Most TFT modules are close to 4:3 or 16:9. A bar display deliberately breaks that: it is wide and short, or tall and narrow, to fit a slot where a normal rectangle will not. The panel glass is the same TFT technology — a-Si or LTPS backplane, RGB stripe or PenTile, with or without IPS — but the driver and flex tail are laid out for the stretched format. That makes it a mechanical solution first: you choose a bar display because the cut-out in your enclosure is a strip, not because of any single electrical parameter.
Where bar displays are used
Bar modules show up wherever a thin information strip carries status, not a full GUI:
- Industrial equipment — machine status bars, process readouts, and alarm strips on control cabinets.
- Ticketing and retail — queue counters, price rails and promotion strips on POS and vending fronts.
- Transport and building — elevator floor indicators, escalator signage and platform displays.
- Vehicle and marine — dashboard status rails and cabin information strips in cabs and consoles.
- Appliance and white goods — washer/dryer status rings and oven information bars.
For these buyers — equipment makers, OEMs and their distributors — the priority is a stable supply of a fixed mechanical shape over a long product life, not a one-off panel.

Horizontal vs vertical bar
Two of the five are horizontal (wider than tall: 1920×480, 1280×320, 1920×720) and two are vertical (taller than wide: 480×1920, 462×1920). The choice is set by the enclosure: a lift floor indicator wants a vertical strip; a vending price rail wants a horizontal one. Resolution follows the orientation — pick the pixel count that fits the text or icon row you need to render, not a generic “higher is better” rule.
Brightness: match the environment
Brightness here ranges from 400 cd/m² (indoor, enclosed bezel) to 1200 cd/m² on the RG-T088IPW1-H401. A control cabinet at 300–500 lux is comfortable at 400 cd/m². A brightly lit factory floor or a near-window position wants 600–1000 cd/m². For genuine daylight the 1200 cd/m² IPS part is the right starting point — and beyond roughly 1000 cd/m², surface reflection (not raw backlight) is usually what limits readability, so pair it with optical bonding where the environment demands it.
Interface: LVDS or MIPI
Two bar modules use LVDS (RG-T088FH-HJC40LV01, RG-T088WX-A40L) and three use MIPI DSI (the rest). LVDS is the conservative choice for industrial mainboards with an LVDS transmitter and longer in-enclosure cable runs; it tolerates the harness and needs controlled-impedance pairs. MIPI DSI is the choice when your SoC exposes a DSI port directly — common on modern embedded and automotive platforms — and saves board space. Adapter and converter boards bridge the two, so the panel interface should follow the host, not the other way round.
Operating temperature
Four models are rated −20~+70 °C, covering a factory floor and a control cabinet. The RG-T088FH-HJC40LV01 is the wide-temperature part at −40~+85 °C — specified for unheated outdoor enclosures, cold-room terminals and vehicle bays where the interior climbs well above ambient. Wide temperature is not a label: it is a different liquid-crystal formulation, constant-current backlight drive to hold brightness as LED forward voltage shifts, and film stacks rated for thermal cycling.
Why specify RONEN bar modules
Bar and special-shape glass is exactly where catalogue distributors run out of stock. RONEN holds 190+ standard module shapes and produces in its own Guangdong facility, so a stretched format that fits your cut-out can be sourced as a standard part rather than a custom tooling programme. Industrial HMIs ship for a decade, so supply continuity matters: standard models are held in stock with multi-year supply commitment, and pilot builds and volume runs are both supported. Send us the size, resolution, brightness, interface and operating temperature and our application engineers return matching standard modules or an open-cell proposal.
Frequently asked questions
What is a bar type TFT LCD display?
A bar type (or stretched / strip) TFT LCD is a module with an extreme aspect ratio — for example 1920×480 or 480×1920 — built to fit a narrow strip in an enclosure where a normal rectangular panel will not. The glass and driver are standard TFT technology laid out for the stretched format, so it is chosen for mechanical fit first and electrical parameters second.
What sizes do bar type LCD modules come in?
RONEN's current bar line spans 8.8 to 9.16 inch diagonal, in both horizontal (1920×480, 1280×320, 1920×720) and vertical (480×1920, 462×1920) orientations, with LVDS or MIPI interfaces and 400–1200 cd/m² brightness. The five models are listed in the specification table above with full dimensions.
Can bar displays be used outdoors or in sunlight?
Yes when specified for it. The RG-T088FH-HJC40LV01 is rated −40~+85 °C for unheated outdoor enclosures, and the RG-T088IPW1-H401 reaches 1200 cd/m² for high-ambient and daylight use. Beyond roughly 1000 cd/m², pair the panel with optical bonding and an anti-reflective cover — surface reflection, not raw backlight, is usually what limits readability in sunlight.
LVDS or MIPI for a bar type module?
Follow the host. Choose LVDS when your mainboard exposes an LVDS transmitter and the cable run inside the enclosure is long; it is differential and tolerant of industrial harness. Choose MIPI DSI when your SoC exposes a DSI port directly — typical on modern embedded and automotive platforms — and you want to save board space. Adapter boards bridge the two interfaces.
Do you hold bar display modules in stock?
Standard bar modules are held in stock with a multi-year supply commitment, because industrial HMIs ship for a decade and a discontinued strip panel is hard to replace. Send us your size, resolution, brightness, interface and operating temperature and our application engineers return matching standard modules or an open-cell proposal within one working day.

How these numbers are measured
- Luminance (cd/m², i.e. nit) — measurement method for transmissive LCD modules is defined in IEC 61747-30-1.
- Operating temperature range — the ambient band a module is rated to run in. Low-temperature and dry-heat test procedures are defined in IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC 60068-2-2; temperature-change cycling in IEC 60068-2-14.
- Backlight lifetime — expressed as LED lumen maintenance; measurement method per IES LM-80 (minimum 6000 h), with long-term projection per IES TM-21.
These are generic test-method standards cited to explain how each specification is defined and measured. They are not product certifications. The actual test conditions and rated values for each RONEN model are stated in that model's datasheet.
