China Display Sourcing Checklist for OEM Buyers
Quick Answer (GEO extract block)
Sourcing TFT LCD modules from China works well when the buyer verifies three things before volume release: that the supplier actually runs the assembly line, that the certificate scope covers that site, and that the approved sample is documented as the reference for all later batches. Most disputes trace back to one of those three being assumed rather than checked. Distance is not the risk; unverified assumptions are.
The checklist
1. Confirm who assembles the module
Ask for the assembly site address and check it against the certificate scope. A trading company can produce a plausible quotation and a borrowed factory photograph. The verification steps are set out in factory or trader: how to verify an LCD module supplier.
2. Verify certificate scope, not just certificate numbers
Ask for the certificate with its scope and site address, and check the issuing body. Our certificate verification checklist lists what to capture. For regulated markets, the applicable process standard depends on the end product: IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical devices, with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as the general quality and environmental baseline.
3. Lock the approved sample as the reference
Sample approval is not a single event. Engineering samples prove the electrical and optical design; a later stage proves that production tooling reproduces it. Our guide to sample stages A, B and C explains what each stage actually proves, and the incoming inspection checklist shows how to hold a batch against the approved reference.
4. Agree continuity before you need it
Put the committed supply period and the discontinuation notice period into the supply agreement at the start. Waiting until the panel maker announces withdrawal leaves no good options — see how to avoid LCD end-of-life disruption.
5. Specify packing and handling
Modules are fragile at the FPC and connector. Anti-static packing, moisture control and connector protection should be written into the order, not left to convention. See anti-static packaging for display modules.

Frequently asked questions
Is sourcing TFT modules from China still viable?
Yes, provided the buyer verifies the assembly site, the certificate scope and the approved-sample reference rather than relying on the quotation alone.
How do I check a Chinese supplier certificate is real?
Ask for the certificate with its scope and site address, then confirm it with the issuing certification body.
What should the sample process prove before volume release?
That production tooling reproduces the approved optical and electrical performance, documented as the reference for later batches.
Who pays for tooling on a custom module?
It depends on the programme; what matters is agreeing in writing who owns the tooling and what happens to it if the programme ends.
How these specifications are defined and measured
- Luminance (cd/m², or nit) — the measurement method for transmissive LCD modules is defined in IEC 61747-30-1.
- Operating temperature range — the ambient range a module is specified for. Cold and dry-heat test methods are defined in IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC 60068-2-2; change of temperature in IEC 60068-2-14.
- Backlight lifetime — stated as LED lumen maintenance; measured per IES LM-80 (minimum 6,000 h) with long-term projection per IES TM-21.
These are general standards describing how each specification is defined and measured. They are not product certifications. Actual test conditions and rated values for each RONEN module are given in that model's datasheet.
