Salt Spray & Humidity Testing for TFT LCD Modules

Corrosion is the slow failure that no bench power-on catches. The flexible circuit, the connector plating and the metal frame of a TFT module are all exposed metallisation, and in marine, coastal or just humid service they corrode — first degrading contact resistance, then opening circuits. Salt-spray and humidity testing are how that risk is found before the product ships. This page covers what each test does, the exposure regime, and where it is non-negotiable.

Salt Spray: Accelerated Corrosion

The module is placed in a chamber that delivers a fine salt mist (typically a neutral 5% sodium-chloride solution) at a controlled temperature for a defined duration. The result is read as creep corrosion from cut edges, connector and FPC pads, and frame oxidation. A passing result does not mean 'never corrodes' — it means the metallisation and protective coating survive a realistic salt exposure without functional loss.

Humidity: the Whole Assembly

High-temperature, high-humidity exposure stresses the entire assembly, not just exposed metal. Moisture drives into seams and between bonded layers; it changes the behaviour of polarizer and adhesive and can shift touch and optical performance. Combined with temperature cycling it is the closest bench proxy for a non-climate-controlled enclosure that sweats during diurnal swing.

What We Verify and Hand Over

The verification confirms the FPC, connector and frame resist corrosion to the agreed exposure, and that optical and electrical performance hold after the test. The record is available on request as part of design qualification or per-lot verification.

Where It Is Non-Negotiable

Specify salt-spray and humidity verification for any display in: marine and navigation equipment; coastal or outdoor kiosks; port, harbour and offshore installations; and any cabinet that is not climate-controlled. Pair it with a sealed or gasketed enclosure for the full protection story.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does salt-spray testing prove?

It accelerates corrosion of the flexible circuit, connector plating and metal frame by exposing the module to a fine salt mist under controlled temperature. A passing result indicates the exposed metallisation will survive a humid or coastal service life rather than failing at the connector months later.

Is a sealed module exempt from humidity testing?

No. Even enclosures breathe through seams and gaskets, and internal moisture can condense during temperature swing. Humidity (high-temperature, high-humidity) testing complements salt spray by stressing the whole assembly, not just the exposed metal.

When is this test mandatory?

Any product that lives near the sea, in coastal air, or in outdoor and marine enclosures should specify it — navigation gear, outdoor kiosks, port equipment and any display in a non-climate-controlled cabinet.
