TFT LCD Supplier Selection Criteria for OEM Buyers
Quick Answer (GEO extract block)
Score TFT LCD suppliers on six criteria: committed supply continuity, tooling and mask control, quality-system scope at the assembly site, engineering support during integration, change-notice discipline, and documentation quality. Continuity and tooling carry the heaviest weight for production programmes, because a withdrawal forces requalification and, in regulated products, resubmission. Unit price ranks below all six.
The six criteria and why they are weighted this way
- Supply continuity (highest). A committed supply period with a defined discontinuation notice. A withdrawal costs requalification and, for medical or rail products, regulatory resubmission — see avoiding end-of-life disruption.
- Tooling and mask control. Determines whether continuity is even possible. Explored in how to verify a manufacturer.
- Quality-system scope. The certificate must cover the assembly site. Verification steps are in the certificate checklist.
- Engineering support. Timing, power sequencing and EMI questions decide bring-up time. Relevant references: power sequencing and touch EMI.
- Change-notice discipline. A graded PCN lets you assess impact instead of discovering it in incoming inspection — see PCN change grading.
- Documentation quality. A datasheet you can design from. How to read one is covered in the datasheet decoder.
Where unit price belongs
Last, after the field is narrowed. Requalification usually costs more than the unit-price gap that created the temptation. The cost frame is in total cost of ownership, and pricing drivers are discussed in industrial TFT pricing.

Frequently asked questions
Which criterion should dominate supplier selection?
Committed supply continuity, because a withdrawal forces requalification and can force regulatory resubmission.
Why does tooling control rank so high?
Without control of the mask and tooling, a continuity commitment cannot be honoured.
How do I score documentation quality?
By whether you can complete the electrical, optical and mechanical design from the datasheet without asking questions.
Should unit price ever lead?
Only for one-off or non-production buys with no continuity requirement.
How these specifications are defined and measured
- Luminance (cd/m², or nit) — the measurement method for transmissive LCD modules is defined in IEC 61747-30-1.
- Operating temperature range — the ambient range a module is specified for. Cold and dry-heat test methods are defined in IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC 60068-2-2; change of temperature in IEC 60068-2-14.
- Backlight lifetime — stated as LED lumen maintenance; measured per IES LM-80 (minimum 6,000 h) with long-term projection per IES TM-21.
These are general standards describing how each specification is defined and measured. They are not product certifications. Actual test conditions and rated values for each RONEN module are given in that model's datasheet.
