SoC / MPU Display Compatibility Reference

Can your controller drive the panel you want? This table summarises the display interfaces and typical resolution ceilings of popular industrial SoCs and MPUs, so you can match controller and module before committing a design. Always verify against the official datasheet of your exact part.

PlatformTypical partsDisplay interfacesTypical ceiling*
ST STM32 (LTDC)F429 / F746 / H743RGB parallel≈ XGA–WXGA, framebuffer in internal RAM
NXP i.MX RTRT1050 / RT1170RGB / eLCDIF≈ WXGA
NXP i.MX 6 / 8Mi.MX6ULL / 6 / 8M MiniRGB, LVDS, MIPI-DSI1080p class (i.MX8M higher)
RockchipRK3308 / RK3568 / RK3588RGB, LVDS, MIPI-DSI, HDMI4K class on RK3588
AllwinnerA33 / A64 / T-seriesRGB, LVDS, MIPI-DSI1080p class
Raspberry PiCM4 / Pi 5MIPI-DSI, HDMI1080p+ per lane config

*Ceilings are typical figures for orientation; the exact limit depends on the part, memory bandwidth and lane count — confirm with the official datasheet and check the pixel clock with our PCLK & Bandwidth Calculator, then generate ready-to-use timing with the MCU Timing Generator.

FAQ

Can an STM32 drive a TFT LCD module directly?

Yes — STM32F4/F7/H7 parts with the LTDC controller drive RGB-parallel panels directly from internal memory. Resolution is limited by RAM and bandwidth, so large panels are better paired with MPUs or modules with a serial interface (SPI/MCU bus).

Which interface should I choose between RGB, LVDS and MIPI-DSI?

RGB parallel is simplest at low resolution, LVDS suits longer cable runs and higher clocks, MIPI-DSI saves pin count and power on modern SoCs. Use the Display Interface Selector for a structured recommendation.

My SoC only has SPI — can I still use a colour TFT?

Yes. Many of our modules support SPI or MCU 8080 bus interfaces for exactly this case; check the interface filter in the Display Finder and mind the achievable frame rate at higher resolutions.
